What is Time? ( Olympic National Park)

Where the trees upon the mountains meet the ocean…

Hey beautiful souls🌺

I’m in Olympic National Park, and time here feels like it’s taken a vacation. Seriously have you ever experienced a place where you wake up at 7 AM thinking you’ll go for a quick hike and then, six hours later, you’re still wondering how it’s possible that it’s already 3 PM? Whether it’s the long days where you’re surrounded by chaotic tourists or the peaceful mornings floating on Lake Crescent, this park makes you stop and wonder how lucky are we to live in such a beautiful place, even if it’s just for a short time?

Now, Olympic National Park isn’t just your average park. It’s not just a patch of trees and dirt. No, my peeps, this is where ancient forests meet towering mountains, where waterfalls crash in a way that makes you  say omgg, and where the ocean feels like it could swallow you whole if you’re not paying attention. Time here doesn’t rush it just sort of… meanders. So let me tell you about some of the highlights of this park where the only thing that seems to be on a schedule is the weather (and even then, it’s more of a suggestion).

Hiking Storm King and Pyramid Peak: “Is This What Fitness Feels Like?”

Let’s start with the mountains, Because if you’re going to visit Olympic National Park, you’re going to get up close and personal with some serious peaks. Storm King and Pyramid Peak are two of my most beloved mountains here, and hiking them is less about getting a nice workout and more about testing your sanity and your glutes.

The Storm King Trail is what those in the business like to call “a good challenge” (translation: your quads will burn, and you’ll wonder what part of you made this decision). But, oh my gosh, the views from the top are totally worth it. You start off in a dense forest, dodging trees, roots, and the you reach the summit, and suddenly you’re looking out over  Lake Crescent. Time? What is time? You’re standing on top of the world, and you’re just happy you made it without tripping over yourself.

Pyramid Peak takes hiking to another level. If you thought Storm King was challenging, Pyramid Peak will have you thinking, ‘Hold my moss-covered beer.’ It’s steep, rocky, and the kind of trail that makes you question your life choices especially when you’re hiking solo in cougar territory. And keep an eye out for landslides! But when you reach the summit… It’s like stepping into a painting. The view is breathtaking, and for a moment, you’ll feel like a true warrior. Seriously, after this climb, you’ll feel invincible.

Sol Duc Falls

The Sol Duc Falls Trail is an easy hike, which means there’s less chance of you turning into a sweaty puddle halfway through. As you approach the falls, you’ll start hearing the roar of water crashing over moss-covered rocks. When you get to the falls, it’s like nature just drops the mic. The water plunges down in three distinct cascades, and you’ll likely say something dramatic like, “This is what peace feels like.” It’s impossible not to feel humbled standing here, gazing at the raw beauty, and realizing that, in this moment, nothing else matters. Time? It’s gone. You’re just here, surrounded by moss and waterfalls, soaking in the tranquility.

The Hoh Rainforest: “Moss Is the New Green”

Now, let’s talk about the Hoh.. It’s not so much a place as it is an experience a magical, green wonderland where it rains a lot, and trees wear the best fashion statements in the form of moss. You’ll walk under towering trees, and if you look closely, you might just spot a bird staring at you as if it knows secrets about the forest that you’ll never understand.

The Hoh River Trail is the best way to explore this magical place, and it’s as if you’ve stepped into another world. It’s relatively flat, but let’s be real you’ll be too busy looking up at the trees and wondering how moss is growing on literally everything to notice the slight incline. It’s peaceful here. Almost too peaceful. You’ll find yourself saying things like, “I could live here forever” and honestly, who’s stopping you?

In the Hoh, time gets lost in the trees. It’s that rare kind of peace that makes you forget about all the things you thought were important and focus on the simple beauty around you. If you’re lucky, the rain will be gently falling, and you’ll get that perfect misty vibe where everything seems impossibly lush. Moss-covered rocks, flowing rivers, and the wind through the trees it’s a reminder that nature doesn’t rush, and neither should you.

Cape Flattery:

Let’s wrap up with Cape Flattery, the very tippity-top of the Olympic Peninsula, where the land meets the ocean in a dramatic fashion. This is the place where you can stand and look out over the water and think, “damn, I feel like I’m at the edge of the world.” The Cape Flattery Trail takes you through coastal forest and ends at viewpoints where the Pacific Ocean crashes against rocky sea stacks.

Here, the Pacific is loud, wild, and beautiful. You might spot some whales, seals, or sea otters (yes, I just said otters your heart will melt). You’ll stand there on the cliffs, wind in your hair, thinking, “This is it. This is the good stuff.” And as you watch the waves crash and the birds soar above, you’ll realize: time isn’t even a thing here. It’s just you, yourself and the ocean, maybe you’ll get that overwhelming sense of gratitude for the fact that this is your reality for however long you can savor it.

The Olympic Time Warp

So, what is time in Olympic National Park? It’s a mystery (maybe ask the tree of life?). It’s both slow and fast. It’s slipping through your fingers one moment and dragging on for what feels like an eternity in the next. But, when you’re surrounded by this much beauty whether you’re scaling peaks, chasing waterfalls, or standing at the edge of the world—time doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you’re here, in this magical place, enjoying every second of it.

And if you lose track of time entirely? Don’t worry that just means you’re experiencing it the way you’re meant to.

With love,
