Pretty Things & Minor Inconveniences

I love pretty things. Cute coffee mugs, fresh flowers, a good lip gloss, matching pajamas, little dishes that serve absolutely no purpose other than being cute. I love all of it.

I also love a peaceful life, which is funny because I can be very laid-back and still get annoyed by the smallest inconvenience.

I think it depends on whether I’ve already made a plan in my head.

Most of the time, I’m pretty easygoing. I don’t need everything to be a certain way, and I’m usually fine with going with the flow. However, once I’ve decided how something is supposed to go, I’ve already mentally prepared for it. I’ve pictured it, planned around it, and moved on to whatever comes next.

So when things suddenly change?

I need a second. Lol.

It’s not that everything has to go my way. I just don’t always appreciate having to rearrange a plan I’ve already committed to in my head.

I can absolutely adjust. Just give me a minute to be annoyed first.

I Just Think It’s Cute, Okay?

I’ve always appreciated the little details.

I love a clean home, fresh sheets, flowers on the counter, and finding something cute that I absolutely did not need but somehow convinced myself would look perfect in my house.

I like pretty dishes. I like candles. I like books stacked on a table and a room that feels comfortable without looking like nobody actually lives there.

I also have favorite mugs, which I think is completely normal.

Some mugs are just better than others. I don’t make the rules.

There’s something about having little things around you that you genuinely enjoy. It doesn’t have to be expensive or particularly special to anyone else.

Sometimes it’s a new lip gloss. Sometimes it’s a cute pair of pajamas. Sometimes it’s finding a pretty bowl at the store and immediately deciding that I need it, despite having perfectly good bowls at home.

Do I need another one? No.

Would I use it? Absolutely.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with enjoying those things. I work with what I have, I know what I like, and I enjoy making my everyday surroundings feel nice.

Not everything needs a bigger explanation.

Sometimes something is pretty, and that’s enough for me.

The Minor Inconveniences Are Getting a Little Too Comfortable

Now, as much as I enjoy the little things, there are also little things that genuinely get on my nerves.

For example, getting completely comfortable in bed and realizing I left something in another room.

I was done moving for the evening. Why are we doing this?

Or having a really good hair day when I have absolutely nowhere to go, only for my hair to do whatever it wants on the day I actually have plans.

That’s crazy.

Then there’s the kitchen.

If you’ve read Things I Hate, you already know how I feel about dirty dishes.

I love a clean kitchen. Not just a kitchen that looks clean from a distance. I want the counters wiped down, the dishes washed, and the sink empty.

There’s something so satisfying about finishing everything, turning off the kitchen light, and knowing it’s done.

So imagine my disappointment when I walk back in and there’s a random cup sitting in the sink.

Excuse me?

We were literally just clean.

I know people live here. I know dishes are going to get used. I’m not confused about how a kitchen works.

I would just appreciate it if the clean kitchen could remain clean for a reasonable amount of time.

Is that too much to ask? Apparently. Lol.

I also don’t enjoy when I’m already running a little behind and something decides to take longer than it should.

The outfit I planned doesn’t look how I imagined. I can’t find something I literally just had. I have to stop for gas when I thought I had enough.

Now I’m irritated because none of this was included in the schedule I made up in my head.

That’s usually when I have to remind myself to take a breath.

Because, realistically, it’s fine.

Annoying, but fine.

I’m Laid-Back Until I’ve Already Made Up My Mind

I think this is the part of my personality that makes me laugh the most.

I really can be a laid-back person. I’m not walking around needing to control every little thing, and I don’t expect life to go exactly how I want it to.

I just like knowing what I’m doing.

If I decide I’m going to spend my afternoon running errands, coming home, making dinner, and relaxing for the evening, that’s the plan.

In my head, it’s already happening.

So when something unexpected comes up and throws everything off, I have to mentally adjust.

Sometimes I do that immediately. Other times, I need to stare into space for a second and reconsider my entire afternoon.

Nothing dramatic.

Just me being slightly dramatic.

The funny thing is that I usually get over it pretty quickly. Once I’ve had a minute, I can figure out another plan and keep going.

I just don’t always love the initial interruption.

I think there’s a difference between being difficult and simply needing a moment when something doesn’t go as expected.

I don’t need everyone around me to rearrange their day because I’m annoyed. I can handle the change.

I might just need to be quiet for a minute while I do it.

Pretty Doesn’t Mean Perfect

I love aesthetically pleasing photos. Beautiful kitchens, cozy bedrooms, cute outfits, fresh flowers, little coffee shops. I could look at that kind of content all day.

I’m also aware that a pretty picture is just a pretty picture.

It doesn’t tell you what the rest of someone’s day looked like.

You don’t see the laundry waiting to be folded, the grocery bags that still need to be put away, or the ten minutes someone spent looking for their keys before leaving the house.

You see the nice part.

Which is fine. I love the nice part too.

I just don’t think my entire life needs to look like that for me to enjoy it.

I can love my home and still have things that need to be done. I can enjoy getting dressed up and still spend half the week in comfortable clothes. I can make a beautiful breakfast and then immediately have to clean the kitchen afterward.

Although, to be clear, the dishes are getting washed.

I also don’t want to feel like I need to turn every ordinary moment into something worth photographing.

Sometimes I want to eat my food while it’s hot.

Sometimes I want to sit on the couch in my pajamas, read my book, and not worry about whether anything looks particularly cute.

I can appreciate beautiful things without needing to make every part of my life beautiful.

There’s a difference.

Not Everything Needs to Mean Something

I think the internet has made us feel like every little thing we enjoy has to be connected to some bigger lifestyle.

Buying flowers is self-care. Cleaning your home is a reset. Getting dressed for the day is becoming your best self. Having a quiet morning is a lesson in slowing down.

I understand where it comes from, and I enjoy some of those things myself.

Still, sometimes I just want flowers.

I don’t need them to represent a fresh start or a new chapter. I saw them, thought they were pretty, and brought them home.

That’s it.

The same goes for the little inconveniences.

If my plans change and I get irritated, I don’t necessarily need to turn that into a lesson about letting go of control.

Sometimes I was just looking forward to doing something a certain way.

I can recognize that I’m being a little ridiculous without needing to sit down and unpack why.

I think there’s room for both.

You can appreciate your life, enjoy the things you have, and still have moments when something gets on your nerves.

You can be grateful and annoyed.

You can be easygoing and particular about certain things.

You can want a peaceful life and still occasionally lose your patience over something as ridiculous as a dirty dish.

Personally, I think that’s pretty normal.

A Little Pretty, A Little Annoying

At the end of the day, I know what I like.

I like a clean kitchen, a comfortable home, a good book, pretty little things, and having something to look forward to.

I like when my plans work out, when my hair cooperates, and when I find something cute that happens to be on sale.

I also know that I’m going to have days when things don’t go how I pictured them.

Something will take longer than expected. I’ll forget something at home. My schedule will change, or I’ll walk into the kitchen and find a dish in the sink that I know wasn’t there five minutes ago.

I’ll probably be annoyed.

I’ll probably say something about it.

Then I’ll take a breath, figure it out, and move on.

I don’t think I need to pretend that every inconvenience rolls right off my back just because I’m generally a laid-back person.

I’m allowed to have my little moments.

I just try not to let them become the entire day.

So yes, I still want the fresh flowers, the pretty dishes, the cute outfits, the clean kitchen, and all the little things that make life enjoyable.

I also accept that things aren’t always going to go according to the very specific plan I’ve already created in my head.

Whatever.

I’ll adjust.

Just let me take my breath first. Lol.

With love,

Aurora
