Homemade Pumpkin Purée

Homemade pumpkin purée is simple, naturally creamy, and made with just one ingredient. Roast a small sugar or pie pumpkin until tender, then blend until smooth for an easy homemade alternative to canned pumpkin that’s perfect for lattes, baking, soups, and cozy fall recipes.

Servings 2 Cups

Ingredients

  • 1 small sugar pumpkin or pie pumpkin about 2–4 pounds

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Prepare the pumpkin.
  • Wash and dry the pumpkin. Carefully slice it in half from stem to base.
  • Scoop out the seeds and stringy center with a large spoon. You can discard the seeds or save them for roasting.
  • Roast.
  • Place the pumpkin halves cut-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Roast for 45–60 minutes, depending on the size of your pumpkin. It’s ready when the flesh is very tender and can easily be pierced with a fork.
  • Let it cool.
  • Remove the pumpkin from the oven and let it rest until it’s cool enough to comfortably handle.
  • Scoop.
  • Use a spoon to scoop the soft roasted pumpkin flesh away from the skin. Discard the skin.
  • Blend until smooth.
  • Transfer the pumpkin to a food processor or high-speed blender. Blend until completely smooth and creamy, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed.
  • If the pumpkin is particularly dry and difficult to blend, add water 1 tablespoon at a time, using only as much as necessary.
If Your Pumpkin Purée Is Watery
Fresh pumpkin can contain more moisture than canned pumpkin.
If your purée looks thin or watery, place it in a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth or a clean kitchen towel. Set it over a bowl and allow it to drain until it reaches a thicker, spoonable consistency.
This is especially helpful if you plan to use your homemade purée for baking, where excess moisture can affect the finished recipe.
For lattes, a slightly softer purée is perfectly fine.

Notes

How to Store Homemade Pumpkin Purée
Let the purée cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container.
Refrigerator: Store for up to 4 days.
Freezer: Freeze for up to 3 months.
For easy portions, spoon the purée into an ice cube tray and freeze until solid. Transfer the frozen cubes to a freezer-safe container or bag.
Small portions are especially handy for homemade pumpkin lattes. Take out exactly what you need without thawing an entire container.
